Received $2,900 grant to create Beneath the Surface: Amplifying the Voices of Divers. Beneath the Surface is an immersive 360-degree mini-documentary that highlights the impacts of climate change on marine life and the livelihoods of diving communities, specifically smaller island communities. Over the course of 6 weeks, Neti will travel to diving communities in different regions to conduct interviews and capture footage of the local marine life and communities that depend on dive tourism. Working with local dive centers, she plans to interview divers, support staff (such as boaters, administrative staff, and conservationists), and local residents whose livelihoods are impacted by dive tourism. An Insta360 X4 action camera will be used to film coral reefs and the visible effects of climate change, such as coral bleaching and the degradation of marine ecosystems. The final product – a mini-documentary including both the human effects of climate change (told through personal stories from the interviews) and captivating 360-degree underwater footage of the marine environment – will be shared with members of the Penn community.
Selected as a finalist team and $1,500 grant recipient for VoluVision, a full-color volumetric display based on microflyers. VoluVision is creating a full-color volumetric display based on photophoretic levitation of micrometer-scale polymer films with payloads of LEDs, powered by a spatial light modulator. This technology has the potential to revolutionize medical visualization, which improves diagnostics and surgical outcomes.
Our proposal, Carbon Negative: A Modular Approach to Advancing Green Airport Infrastructure, entailed implementing direct air capture technology that removes carbon emissions from the air, alongside a move to electrify airplanes and the ground vehicles that help make airports run. As one of eight finalists to present, the Penn group was awarded the “Most Intriguing Concept” award.
Projects
Project Shakti (Sanskrit for strength and power) is an initiative that was born out of Schools for Success, with the mission of empowering women through education and health at all stages in their lives. Our proposal includes three components, with a primary focus on developing a Pen Pal program between underserved girls in Hyderabad, India and Telugu-students in the U.S. Our small but ambitious team of two has applied for and is continuing to apply to local and global grants to bring Project Shakti to life.
Founded SFS (https://schoolsforsuccess.com/). The first mission of SFS is for every child to have an equal educational opportunity. Over 200 million children receive little to no schooling. If every child had the opportunity to a proper education, the amount he or she could achieve would increase exponentially. The second mission is to guide eager, driven teenagers looking to make a difference in the world. This project gives each teen an opportunity to take control of their own project and goals. This new endeavor will change the way young adults view themselves, their communities, and the world. SFS supports other students as they continue their altruistic journey to aid other children. Thus far, SFS completed 8 projects and donated over $6,500.
